This one-day course offered to Honor Health Neuroscience Institute will focus on knowledge translation of key concepts into clinical practice.

Course Description

There are many challenges (and rewards!) working with clients with Parkinson’s disease. There is a continued ongoing effort to identify the optimal treatment techniques for these individual people to better support the busy therapist. However, the variation of presentations of these individual people makes it extremely difficult to develop the optimal treatment approach. Assisting in this requires keeping up with the latest literature to drive the optimal outcome measure choice along with the most up to date recommendations to improve the development of a plan of care. This one-day course will focus on knowledge translation of key concepts into clinical practice. The session will focus on some of the following but is not limited to: Key components of creating an evidence-based exercise program for individuals with Parkinsons, including aerobic and skill-based training, facial muscle exercises, respiratory muscle training, visual disorders, and dual task training to provide a comprehensive treatment approach for clinicians.

Target Audience: OT, PT

Course Objectives

  1. Determine the primary challenges of clients with PD and prioritize a treatment plan based on the evidence
  2. Design treatment interventions for individuals with Parkinson’s to optimize functional outcomes
  3. Create an exercise program for an individual or group with key evidence-based components
  4. Integrate current evidence supporting dual tasking and cognitive training into physical therapy for people with Parkinson’s
  5. Identify symptoms of hypomimia in patients with PD and develop a patient-centered facial rehabilitation program
  6. Evaluate how dopamine can affect the visual system with individuals diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease.
  7. Weigh different screening assessments for visual deficits associated with Parkinson’s Disease.
