17: How do we up-level what we deliver to go beyond therapy followed by HEP?

Aug 10, 2020

How can we just expect people to be motivated to exercise on their own and not get accountability, guidance, and feedback?

We can’t really think of any situations where it is appropriate and beneficial to give people a stack of papers and telling them to go do it on their own

What are examples of ways you can address more aspects of health for your patients and clients so they thrive?  Listen to some of the programming that Claire is doing with her clients at Rogue to go beyond even physical activity such as a comprehensive cognitive program that addresses prevention and improvement in a multifaceted way.

The research on improving cognition:

  1. Aerobic exercise - get to 60-80% HR max (need to measure this!) at least 3 hrs/week min
  2. Skill based exercise - functional mobility, sports-training, problem solving, complex physical tasks. Ex - dancing, boxing.  At least 3 times per week.
  3. Dual task training - both cognitive and physical.  2 distinct things that could be done completely separately. Ex - texting or dialing a phone number while walking.  At least 3 times per week.

Setting this up as an intensive program with pre- and post- testing.  12 sessions with coaching for how the exercises will be performed.

Normalizing cognition - assessments, prevention

Medications, exercise, brain training, mindfulness meditation, diet, lifestyle, connection

What can you do moving forward to improve this for your clients/patients?

  • Try some assessments and start education your patients and clients
  • Dual task testing is a must.  Try to find tests with age norms.
  • Aerobic exercise measuring their HR.
  • Try Brain HQ yourself.
  • Monitor and have a checklist.  Claire’s checklist: https://www.roguept.com/brain-health-weekly-challenge

Anti-racist actions:  Set up a simple recurring donation to make a habit of helping, being generous, and demonstrating a belief in abundance.  The ACLU is involved in helping MANY human rights issues.
