104: Claire Shares Top Takeaways from Dr. Mischley’s PD School

Apr 11, 2022

Claire went to PD Spring Break led by Dr. Laurie Mischley, NP, PhD, a naturopathic physician based in Seattle, Washington. She treats people with Parkinson’s by combining neuroscience and nutrition, including foods and supplements.

Top Takeaways:

  • Find a good neurologist that you can collaborate with
  • Get different opinions on medication (it takes at least 75 mg carbidopa cumulative in your day for it to be effective to block the side effects of the levodopa. 10/100 medication is not effective or helpful. 1/3 of medications have series side effects right when it comes out because the studies have limitations that don’t always show the serious side effects until more people have taken it)
  • Difference between naturopathic vs allopathic (ie. traditional MD/DO)
  • Social connection is one of the most important components of of health along with diet, supplementation and exercise

"Twenty-one patients with Parkinson's disease were studied because their low maintenance dosages of carbidopa-levodopa in the customary ratio of 1:10 provided less than the daily 75 mg of carbidopa believed necessary to achieve full inhibition of extracerebral dopa decarboxylation. "
