43: How To Recover From ‘Good White Person Syndrome’ Even If You Don’t Think You Have It

Feb 08, 2021

Trigger warning for this episode: this conversation is open, honest and frank about race and racism as we navigate an anti-racism journey. We are chatting today with Liz Weamer, another neuro PT who we met in our anti-racism membership, Building Allyship. In the show we talk about how you can't change your business until you work on yourself personally and your underlying beliefs.  Liz shares her story of where she started (aka having "Good White Person Syndrome" / I don't really think I'm racist) vs where she is after 7 months of doing anti-racist work (Wow, I see it now. I am literally dripping with racism). She defines Good White Person Syndrome, how you know if you have it and what to do about it.

We discuss the books that have made the most impact on this work for us personally and some key takeaways as well as the parallels to neuro PT and racism work.

Anti-racist action: If we said anything that requires calling out please let us know! We are learning, we suck at this. Call us out. Perfectionism is the enemy. Mistakes will happen.
